Save Money With Properly Fitted Quality Gear
In the IP network consulting business, we're often asked the question, "hey can you take a look at this (insert cheap hardware here), it costs less than the (insert high quality piece of networking hardware)." People are always looking to save money, and that is obviously understandable, but the problem with the above question is, will it really save money? Is the risk worth the reward?
We're all about saving people money. That is how we have built our business, but the fact is, there is more to saving money than just initial capital expenditure. You must consider a number of factors when making any type of addition to your network infrastructure. You have to think about things like hardware reliability, software features, power and rack space usage, scalability, warranties, ease of use, support options, replacement costs; the list goes on. What all of this amounts to is the question, "Am I getting exactly what I need?"
Get Things Right the First TimeWhat happens when you implement hardware that is not suited for your needs is you may end up sacrificing many features the more high end models have. You also run the risk of the gear failing, along with no doubt dealing with a less than easy to use user interface. On top of that, when your customers ask, "what kind of equipment will I be on?" You respond with, "We've implemented (insert cheaply made hardware here)." Then they turn up their nose and go elsewhere.
Of course there is also the other end of the spectrum. Maybe you called a pre-sales support line and told them what you hope to do. Then they tossed you the highest priced piece of gear that will accomplish that task. What happens is, you end up way overpaying for equipment that you really don't need.
While you certainly don't want equipment that is outdated and has a high failure rate, you also don't want equipment that is way over your head either. The reason we spend so much time getting to know our clients' needs is because we want to fit them with a solution that will allow them room to grow so they can accomplish their long term goals while also keeping in mind their current budget so their managers are happy.
Quality Saves You MoneyThat being said, it is almost always the case that choosing high quality hardware is much better than choosing the more "cost-effective" strategy. The reason I put quotes around cost-effective is because in these days of quarterly reports and exposing all financial aspects of business, companies have become obsessed with the short term and have become blind to what effect their hasty and perhaps profitable short term decisions may have on their bottom line in the long term.
Although less pricey hardware may look better on your balance sheet in the short term, what happens a year down the road when you need to scale up or add more features, but you realize you can't because you decided to pad your short term reports? What happens a year down the road when your budget hardware fails and you lose a third of your customers? What do you do when you have failure after failure and your business name is in jeopardy because you wanted to save a few thousand dollars?
This not to say that sometimes a cost-effective solution cannot be considered, but it is extremely important that, in the vital parts of your IP network, that you deploy high quality, reliable, scalable, flexible hardware. It may cost you a bit more up front, but believe me, your customers will love it, your staff will love it, and you'll end up making more money in the long run because your network is that much better than the competition. And in this business, I shouldn't have to tell you that peace-of-mind is invaluable.
INC ResultsWe've operated with this strategy in mind for our clients for many years and have been widely successful. In every such case to date, I can 100% honestly say that high quality equipment that is perfectly suited to our clients' needs has resulted in absolutely amazing success and will continue to do so as long as they stay with this strategy.
